Dompu (ANTARA) - Climbing activities on Mount Tambora in the Tambora\nNational Park (TN), West Nusa Tenggara, have been temporarily closed\nstarting this Tuesday due to the increasing risk of forest and land\nfires (karhutla) during the peak of the dry season.<\/p>\n
The Head of the Tambora National Park Office, Abdul Azis Bakray,\nstated that the closure is a follow-up to the Circular Letter from the\nDirector General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE)\nNumber SE.4\/KSDAE\/SKSDAE\/KSA.02.02\/B\/8\/2026, dated 31 August 2026,\nregarding the temporary closure and limited opening of mountain climbing\ntourism in Nature Reserve Areas (KSA) and Nature Conservation Areas\n(KPA) to prevent forest fires.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe temporary closure of climbing activities in Tambora National\nPark begins on 1 September 2026,\u201d he told ANTARA in Dompu on\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
He noted that the closure will remain in effect until the area is\ndeclared safe from fire threats. This policy has been implemented as a\npreventative measure, considering that the vulnerability to forest and\nland fires increases during the dry season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese conditions are one of the considerations for implementing the\ntemporary closure of climbing activities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
According to him, restricting climbing activities is necessary to\nreduce human presence that could potentially trigger fires, while also\nmaking it easier for officers to conduct surveillance and handle any\nforest fires that may occur within the conservation area.<\/p>\n
\u201cPatrols, disaster mitigation, and research activities will continue\nto be carried out,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
He explained that the closure only applies to climbing activities.\nSeveral non-climbing tourist attractions, such as the Oi Marai\nWaterfall, remain open to the public and tourists, provided that the\nsafety conditions of the area are observed.<\/p>\n
The Tambora Jungle Run was held in the Doro Ncanga Resort area across\nseveral track categories, including routes that utilised the climbing\npaths. This event was one of the sports tourism activities held in the\nTambora National Park area before the climbing closure took effect.<\/p>\n
Abdul Azis mentioned that Tambora National Park has not yet\nimplemented an online climbing ticket booking system; therefore, there\nis no mechanism for ticket refunds or cancellations due to the closure\npolicy.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, tourism business operators, guides, and porters have been\nadvised to develop non-climbing tourism services while the climbing\nroutes are closed, including directing tourists to the Oi Marai\nWaterfall.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis policy is taken as a proactive and measured step to protect the\nintegrity of the ecosystem and ensure the safety of climbers,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
