North Sumatra Governor Bobby Nasution has urged the public to remain\nvigilant after Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency erupted with an ash column\nreaching 3,500 metres above the summit on Monday (31\/8) morning.<\/p>\n
The volcano\u2019s status has been raised from Advisory (Level II) to\nAlert (Level III) following the eruption.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is now at Level III, Alert. We from the province certainly urge\nthe public to remain vigilant and careful, especially regarding health\nand road safety,\u201d said Bobby Nasution in Medan.<\/p>\n
He said the North Sumatra provincial government has brought 15,000\nmasks to distribute to residents affected by the volcanic ash fall.<\/p>\n
Fire engines have also been placed on standby to clear accumulations\nof volcanic ash.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe from the provincial government, as soon as the eruption occurred\nthis afternoon, brought 15,000 masks and together with the Regent we\nwill have fire engines on standby to clean critical points so the ash\ndoes not pile up too much,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Regarding learning activities, Bobby said schools have not yet been\nclosed because authorities are still monitoring the latest conditions.\nIf Mount Sinabung\u2019s activity continues to increase, distance learning\nwill be implemented.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will observe for one day. If the ash is indeed heading entirely\ntowards Berastagi, schools will not be closed, but distance learning\nwill be implemented,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Karo Regent Antonius Ginting said a radius of 4.5 to 5\nkilometres from Mount Sinabung\u2019s crater is now off-limits for\nactivities. So far, no evacuees have been recorded.<\/p>\n

Earlier, Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, erupted on\nMonday (31\/8) at around 10.17 a.m. Western Indonesia Time. The observed\nash column height reached 3,500 metres above the summit, or 5,960 metres\nabove sea level.<\/p>\n
The ash column was observed to be black with thick intensity, leaning\ntowards the east and southeast. The eruption was recorded on a\nseismogram with a maximum amplitude of 120 mm and a duration of\napproximately 1 hour, 1 minute and 48 seconds.<\/p>\n
