Karo (ANTARA) - Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, has\nseen its status raised from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Siaga)\nfollowing an increase in volcanic activity and eruptions that produced\nan ash column approximately 3,500 metres high from the mountain\u2019s\npeak.<\/p>\n
According to Special Report No.\u00a01441.Lap\/GL.03\/BGL\/2026 from the\nGeological Agency received in Karo on Monday, the agency established the\nstatus increase effective Monday (31\/8) at 12:30 WIB, after Mount\nSinabung experienced an eruption at 10:17 WIB.<\/p>\n
The eruption ash column reached approximately 3,500 metres above the\npeak, or about 5,960 metres above sea level (mdpl).<\/p>\n
Increased activity was also indicated by Mount Sinabung\u2019s seismicity.\nOn 3rad August 2026, 85 volcanic earthquakes, one inflation earthquake,\nand one harmonic tremor were recorded.<\/p>\n
The Geological Agency stated that this eruption was an initial\neruption, meaning there remains a possibility of larger eruptions\noccurring.<\/p>\n
With the status rising to Level III (Siaga), residents, visitors, and\ntourists are requested not to engage in any activities in villages that\nhave already been relocated.<\/p>\n
Members of the public are also prohibited from conducting activities\nwithin a three-kilometre radius of the peak of Mount Sinabung, as well\nas within a sectoral radius of six kilometres in the south-southeast\nsector.<\/p>\n
In addition to the threat of eruption, residents living near rivers\noriginating from Mount Sinabung are urged to increase vigilance against\nthe potential for lava floods.<\/p>\n
The Geological Agency has advised the public to remain calm and not\nto be provoked by unverified information or issues regarding Mount\nSinabung\u2019s activity.<\/p>\n
The public is requested to follow the directions of the North Sumatra\nProvincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the Karo Regency\nBPBD.<\/p>\n
Local governments, including the North Sumatra and Karo Regency\nBPBDs, are also requested to continue active coordination with the\nSinabung Volcano Observation Post in Ndokum Siroga Village, Simpang\nEmpat District, Karo Regency.<\/p>\n
Developments in Mount Sinabung\u2019s activity can be monitored through\nthe MAGMA Indonesia application as well as the official channels of the\nCentre for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) and\nthe Geological Agency.<\/p>\n
Evaluations of Mount Sinabung\u2019s activity levels will be conducted\nperiodically or as needed should significant changes in activity\noccur.<\/p>\n
