Lumajang, East Java (ANTARA) - Tremors from the lahar flood of Mount\nSemeru in Lumajang Regency, East Java, were recorded for almost four\nhours due to heavy rain that hit the highest mountain on the island of\nJava on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the observation period on Thursday from 00:00 to 06:00 WIB,\none lahar flood tremor was recorded with an amplitude of 17 mm, and the\nduration of the tremor was 13,304 seconds or 3 hours and 42 minutes,\u201d\nsaid Officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, Sigit Rian Alfian, in\na written report received in Lumajang.<\/p>\n
In addition to the lahar flood tremors, during the last six hours, 17\neruption\/ejection tremors were also recorded with an amplitude of 11-22\nmm and a duration of 65-104 seconds, three rockfall tremors with an\namplitude of 2-3 mm and a duration of 33-40 seconds, and one ash tremor\nwith an amplitude of 6 mm and a duration of 51 seconds.<\/p>\n
\u201cVisually, the mountain was covered in fog. No crater smoke was\nobserved. The weather was cloudy to rainy, with weak to strong winds\nblowing to the north and northeast,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Outside of this distance, he said, people should not carry out\nactivities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along\nBesuk Kobokan because it has the potential to be affected by the\nexpansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to a distance of 17 kilometers\nfrom the peak.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are also prohibited from carrying out activities within a\nradius of 5 kilometers from the crater\/peak of Mount Semeru, because\nthey are at risk of being hit by flying rocks (incandescent material),\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n
The public needs to be aware of the potential for hot clouds, lava\nflows, and lahar along the river\/valley that originates at the peak of\nMount Semeru, especially along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar,\nand Besuk Sat, as well as the potential for lahar in small rivers that\nare tributaries of Besuk Kobokan.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD)\nof Lumajang, Isnugroho, said that his party received reports that the\nlahar flood of Mount Semeru occurred at night, but the conditions were\nstill safe and did not overflow into residential areas.<\/p>\n
