Mount Merapi cooling down<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: There has been a decrease in the activity of Mount
\nMerapi, located between Central Java and Yogyakarta, but the
\nlocal administration is maintaining its alert status on the
\nvolcano in anticipation of further eruptions.<\/p>\n
The head of the Yogyakarta Volcano Technological Development
\nand Research Station, Syamsul Rizal, said here on Tuesday the
\nlast activity of any note occurred at 9:28 a.m. on Monday, when a
\ncloud of hot gas was discharged over a distance of three
\nkilometers.<\/p>\n
Other hot clouds were spewed on Monday, but they were shorter
\nbursts and covered less distance, Rizal said. \"Instrumental
\nobservation today (Tuesday) doesn't even detect any hot cloud
\ndischarge, but lava is still flowing over a distance of three
\nkilometers,\" Rizal said.<\/p>\n
He said that visual observation was impossible due to the
\nthick clouds around the peak of the volcano.<\/p>\n
Although the volcanic activities are declining, it was
\nsuggested that people living along the slopes of the mountain
\nleave the area and stop quarrying for sand.<\/p>\n
According to Rizal, the current conditions could mean one of
\ntwo things. First, the volcanic activity is really cooling down,
\nor the volcano is \"gathering more strength\" to explode.<\/p>\n
\"We do not have any reference, but the two possibilities have
