MOU signed to curb violence ahead of general election<\/p>\n

In a bid to minimize violence prior to and during the general
\nelection next year, the Jakarta Police, Jakarta's Chapter of the
\nGeneral Elections Supervisory Committee (Panwaslu) and the
\nJakarta Prosecutor's Office signed on Tuesday a Memorandum of
\nUnderstanding (MOU).<\/p>\n
The MOU was signed by city police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul
\nPadmanagara, head of the Jakarta office of Panwaslu Sarluhut
\nNapitupulu and Jakarta Prosecutor's Office head Moeljoharjo at
\ncity police headquarters.<\/p>\n
Sarluhut said that based on the MOU, election offenders would
\nface shorter police proceedings. The legal process should be less
\nthan 30 days, just like ticketing for traffic violators.<\/p>\n
\"Panwaslu is responsible to solve disputes among political
\nparties while the General Elections Commission (KPU) must oversee
\nany administrative violations and the police handle crimes,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The MOU was signed followed the fresh bloody clashes in Bali
\nbetween supporters of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle
\n(PDI Perjuangan) and the Golkar Party on Sunday in Buleleng, some
\n100 kilometers north of Denpasar. At least, two people were
\nkilled.<\/p>\n
Political observers have warned that the clashes would become
\na bad pretext for other clashes between parties' supporters in
\nthe future, ahead of the elections.<\/p>\n
Makbul also warned the public on similar threats.<\/p>\n
\"We have collected all necessary information (about possible
\nthreats to the elections), including possible conflict between
\nparties' supporters,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He promised that police would take stern action against any
\nviolations by party supporters.<\/p>\n
On May 12, Panwaslu and National Police signed an MOU on the
\nestablishment of district election supervisory bodies. Both
\nparties had agreed to select local police officers as district
\nsupervisors.<\/p>\n
The general election will be held on April 5. The country will
\nalso have its first direct presidential election, scheduled for
\nJuly 5, with the run-off on Sept. 20.<\/p>",
