Motorola-Electrindo tie-up<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Motorola Wireless Data Group has signed an
\nagreement with PT Elektrindo Nusantara -- Indonesia's first
\nwireless data network operator -- to provide a country-wide
\nDataTAC 5000 system for two-way communications.<\/p>\n
This agreement follows a decision made by the Ministry of
\nTourism, Post and Telecommunications to grant Elektrindo a
\nlicense to operate a nationwide packet data wireless
\ncommunication system.<\/p>\n
The system will enable electronic fund transfer and point-of-
\nsales transactions, such as on-line authorization of debit and
\ncredit cards. Motorola said the system will enable e-mail access,
\ndatabase access, automated dispatch and mobile filed maintenance
\nfor sales and technical support service without the need to
\nconnect to a telephone line.<\/p>\n
The data system is scheduled to commence operation in greater
\nJakarta in the first quarter of this year and will later on be
\nexpanded to Bali, Batam, Medan in North Sumatra, Semarang and
\nYogyakarta in Central Java, Surabaya in East Java, and West Java.
