The Coalition for Clean Air has issued an evaluation saying
\nthe city of Jakarta needs about 150 - 200 workshops for the
\nimplementation of a motorized vehicle emission test, given that
\nthere are about 1.5 million private motorized vehicles in Jakarta
\ntoday. (Tempo Interaktif, Feb. 2)<\/p>\n
What does the Jakarta city administration think of the present
\nvehicle inspection test? Corruption has rendered this inspection
\ntest useless. Public vehicles that actually do not pass the test
\ncan get an inspection certificate and run about all over the
\ncity, pumping out air pollution.<\/p>\n
I think an emission test will also become a source of
\ncorruption. What will eventually happen is that a car owner will
\nhave to spend a lot of time and energy but get nothing in return.<\/p>\n
The government has launched its \"Blue Sky\" campaign but then
\nraised sharply the price of lead-free Pertamax. As a result, this
\nexcellent program has lost its usefulness.<\/p>\n
