Motivating Indonesia's workers movement<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, Indonesian Workers Day was officially commemorated
\nat the Senayan Convention Hall. On that occasion, with the
\nMinister of Manpower and other ministers of the cabinet
\nattending, President Soeharto once again called on all parties to
\ntreat our workers as partners in the Pancasila industrial
\nrelations system.<\/p>\n
Worker strikes still occur although reportedly with less
\nfrequency then before. It is to be hoped that this is the result
\nof improvements in their working environments and conditions. The
\nminimum regional wage regulations have also helped promote a
\nrelationship that is based on the principle of partnership
\nbetween workers, employers and the government.<\/p>\n
The use of the word \"workers\" in place of \"laborers\" has a
\npositive objective, which is to disassociate the word from its
\nold context in which the labor movement was a revolutionary
\nmovement based on class struggle.<\/p>\n
This change of terminology, however, is in no way meant to
\ncurb the movement. The new basis is one of partnership in
\ncompanies, industries, factories, plantations or wherever the
\nworkers make their living.<\/p>\n
This principle must be understood by all the parties involved.
\nThe partnership principle in no way diminishes the workers' right
\nto their lot. This is why strikes as a last resort are still
\npossible and tolerated.<\/p>\n
