Mother denies reports of Jumadi's death<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Street singer Jumadi, who was reported as
\nmurdered last week during the two-day violent demonstrations in
\nthe capital, is receiving care in the intensive care unit at
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"Jumadi's condition has improved as he can talk now.<\/p>\n
"But, he may lose one of his lungs, as the bullet has severely
\ndamaged his left lung," his mother, Iti Mariati, said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The 14-year-old Jumadi was admitted to the hospital on Friday
\nnight, after he sustained a gunshot wound during the violent
\ndemonstration against the endorsement of the state security bill
\nby the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
A convoy of military trucks reportedly opened fire at a crowd
\non Jl. Sudirman, wounding the young man.<\/p>\n
Over the past four months, Junadi has been helping out his
\nparents, who have been suffering financial problems.<\/p>\n
Since the incident, some financial assistance has come from
\nfriends of the injured man.<\/p>\n
"Two persons have donated some money. But, the rest of the
\nbill will still be too much for us to pay," his mother said.<\/p>\n
The violent demonstrations last week also brought anguish and
\nuncertainty to the parents of Fadly Muchtar, who was one of the
\neight people killed over the two days of protests.<\/p>\n
"We've lost our only son, who financially supported us in the
\npast two years.<\/p>\n
"We're just cigarette vendors, it was our son Fadly who took
\ncare of us," Muchtar, father of the 20-year-old Fadly, said after
\ntheir son's burial procession on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Upon graduating from senior high school in mid-1997, Fadly
\nworked at PT Survey Research Indonesia.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, Fadly did not return home from his work place.
\nFive of his colleagues, including his supervisor Chandra Munas,
\ntook the initiative on Friday morning to check on his
\nwhereabouts.<\/p>\n
The colleagues visited three hospitals before being informed
\nthat Fadly had been sent to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.<\/p>\n
They said their colleague's body displayed two shot wounds in
\nthe back and that his face was bruised. However, they were unable
\nto clarify the events surrounding his death, as police declined
\nto provide the family any information.<\/p>\n
"He lost his soul and all his teeth. Also how could you
\nexplain the bruises?" asked Fadly's mother, Mainiar.<\/p>\n
Having heard from Fadly's colleagues about how unhelpful the
\npolice were in providing information on Fadly's whereabouts, his
\nparents said that they were suspicious their son may have been
\nmurdered by security officers. (03)<\/p>",
