Most security guards not well-trained: Police<\/p>\n

The high crime rate in the city has prompted some owners of
\nluxurious houses to hire security guards. However, most guards
\nare not that useful when confronted with fearless robbers.<\/p>\n
This month alone, three houses that had guards in upscale
\nSouth Jakarta were robbed. The robbers overcame the uniformed
\nsecurity guards by pointing sharp weapons at them.<\/p>\n
\"The guards are probably not well-trained ... the employers
\nperhaps only bought them uniforms but did not give them proper
\ntraining,\" Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Prasetyo commented
\nover the weekend.<\/p>\n
He added that to be a security guard, one should undergo
\ntraining arranged by the police.<\/p>\n
The training includes martial arts and shooting lessons. \"We
\nalso train them how to react if there's a bomb threat in the
\noffice building where they work, for example,\" Prasetyo
\nexplained.<\/p>\n
A guard at an office building on Jl. Sudirman, Hermawan, 31,
\nclaimed he had been a security guard for five years and had
\nparticipated in two training programs.<\/p>\n
\"The first one was police training that took two weeks. The
\nlast one was with the military,\" he told The Jakarta Post on
\nSaturday. \"It took two months to complete.\"<\/p>\n
Before each training program he had to undergo psychological
\nand physical tests, as well as an endurance test arranged by a
\nsecurity guard agency. The agency also set physical requirements,
\nsuch as a minimum height of 168 centimeters for recruits.<\/p>\n
\"My standard devices are a knife, a baton and handcuffs,\"
\nHermawan said.<\/p>\n
What if a robber pointed a gun at his head?<\/p>\n
\"Well, we have just to be brave,\" he answered.<\/p>\n
Another security guard working for a company in South Jakarta,
\nDiki, does not have the slightest idea about what he would do if
\nconfronted with an armed robber.<\/p>\n
Before working as a security guard, Diki was an office boy at
\nthe same company. When the company trimmed down its workforce,
\nDiki was given a guard's uniform. He is registered as an employee
\nunder the general affairs department as the company does not have
\na security department.<\/p>\n
Earlier last month, in a seminar on security managers, former
\nJakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. Makbul Padmanagara said that
\ncompanies in Jakarta regarded security more as a cost-consuming
\nmatter, not an investment.<\/p>\n
He revealed reports of a number of companies that simply gave
\nsecurity guards uniforms, but not training. Nor did they have a
\nproper recruitment process.<\/p>",
