Now, did you know that?<\/p>\n<p>Government officials said yesterday Indonesia had yet to find<br>\nnames for 11,808 of its isles across the world's largest<br>\narchipelago.<\/p>\n<p>The country is also having a headache finding proper names for<br>\nnumerous rivers, forests, mountains and hills. Some have the same<br>\nnames and it has yet to be decided what to do about it.<\/p>\n<p>To handle the problem, the home affairs ministry and the<br>\ncoordinating body for survey and mapping agreed yesterday to work<br>\ntogether.<\/p>\n<p>\"We believe it's urgent to find names for the many isles,\"<br>\nsaid chief of the survey and mapping agency Paul Suharto after<br>\nsigning the memorandum of understanding.<\/p>\n<p>The absence of names has posed problems for search and rescue<br>\noperations trying to locate incidents in remote places.<\/p>\n<p>Suharto said naming the isles would greatly benefit the<br>\nmilitary in its defense operations.<\/p>\n<p>The naming would be in line with recommendations at the United<br>\nNations' 1967 conference, which suggested all its members conduct<br>\ngeographical mapping.<\/p>\n<p>The project will involve linguists from Center for<br>\nDevelopment of Indonesian Language, Suharto said.<\/p>\n<p>The spelling and pronunciation of names would be taken from<br>\nthe local languages. The names should be nationally and<br>\ninternationally accepted, he said.<\/p>\n<p>He refused to say how much the project will cost. (03\/imn)<\/p>",
