Most discotheques, cafes ignore rules<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Most cafes and discotheques in Jakarta have
\nfailed to win an Excellence in Tourism award because they
\nconstantly breach regulations, an official said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Fauzi Bowo, head of the city's tourist agency, said after the
\nAdikarya Wisata 1997 award ceremony at Sahid Jaya Hotel, Central
\nJakarta, that most cafes and discotheques violated opening hours,
\nhad insufficient permits or allowed drug dealing and obscene
\nactivities on their premises.<\/p>\n
\"(Cafes and discotheques) usually fail the first stage of the
\nscreening process. How can they become participants if they
\nviolate too many rules from the outset?\" he said.<\/p>\n
All of this year's 71 award winners came from hotels,
\nrestaurants, museums, airlines or travel agencies.<\/p>\n
The awards honor tourist companies and professionals that
\ndisplay exceptional initiative, achievement and dedication to
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Basically the city has been giving equal chances to every
\nmember of the tourist sector to enter the awards. But I think the
\nproblem lies in the condition of cafes and discotheques in
\nJakarta,\" Fauzi said.<\/p>\n
Most entertainment spots -- ranging from nightclubs and bars
\nto discotheques -- are established as a place of amusement
\nwithout any sense of social responsibility, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Such places tend to let people do whatever they want to...
\nwithout limitations.<\/p>\n
\"For instance, the closing time is 2 a.m., but there are some
\nplaces which dare to stay open until 6 or 7 a.m. just because
\nthey have a full house. This is wrong.<\/p>\n
\"They have to realize that their existence can also make a
\ngreat contribution to this society.<\/p>\n
Based on data from the city's public order office, 250
\nentertainment spots have been closed down and reopened this year.<\/p>\n
Although cafes or restaurants have never ranked in the city's
\nAdikarya Wisata Awards, Fauzi expressed his hope that
\nentertainment venues would eventually be able to make the grade.<\/p>\n
Hari Santoso, head of the judging panel, said that Adikarya
\nWisata was considered the most prestigious trophy in Indonesian
\ntourism.<\/p>\n
\"So, the winner of this award has proven itself to be the best
\nin each of its categories,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Among this year's winners were Ancol Dreamland, Pondok Indah
\nMall, Ciputra Mall, Regent Hotel, Hotel Arcadia, Hotel Ciputra,
\nHotel Princen Park, Manari Restaurant and Citra Taxi.<\/p>\n
The winners of the certificate I and certificate II categories
\nincluded Bidadari Island, Matahari Island, Bouraq Airlines,
\nSingapore Airlines, Museum Satria Mandala, British Airways, Hotel
\nMillenium Sirih, Hotel Ibis, Hotel Sahid Jaya and Angus
