JAKARTA (JP): Living in an apartment offers many conveniences
\nand advantages. In addition to the convenient location of most
\napartments here, furnished and decorated residences are also
\navailable for short or long-term stays, with everything on hand
\nto ensure a comfortable life.<\/p>\n
Tenants can also relax and watch cable television, log on to
\nthe Internet in their comfortable living rooms, and cook meals in
\na kitchen equipped with refrigerator, stove and microwave. In

Guaranteed security? Well, most apartment operators claim they
\noffer the best security devices and staff to protect their
\ntenants.<\/p>\n
This includes fire alarms, guarded parking lots and controlled
\nentrances, close circuit television (CCTV), intercom systems,
\nemergency exit and peepholes in doors.<\/p>\n
Many tenants may not be too sure about whether their
\nbelongings are really safe in their apartments. Apartment
\nsecurity should begin from the moment a tenant moves in.<\/p>\n
One tenant living of a leading apartment block in the capital
\nsaid he had had several unhappy experiences due to poor security
\nat the high-rise residential building located in the Bendungan
\nHilir area, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Once a man tried to open my door with the wrong key. When I
\napproached the man, he realized he was in the wrong tower. It was
\nacceptable since the man was also a tenant. But my friends then
\ntold me that they could use the elevator from the parking
\nbasement directly to my floor without any difficulty. The
\nautomatic key at the main entrance is frequently out of order. I
\nthink the apartment has a very poor security system, but I have
\nno choice but to stay here as I have paid the rent up front.<\/p>\n
\"When I complained to an executive of the apartment, he just
\ntold me it was bureaucracy at fault and therefore improving the
\nsecurity system would take a long time,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Some serviced apartments in Jakarta accept tenants on a daily
\nbasis, meaning that they operate like hotels. Thus, security is
\ncompromised in that visitors cannot be thoroughly checked each
\ntime they enter without the risk of annoying them.<\/p>\n
And, just like hotels, the lobbies of high-rise residential
\nbuildings are the easiest place to spot intruders.<\/p>\n
However, Cheah Hooi Theng of Allson Residence said his
\napartment applied the best security system to avoid problems and
\nto protect tenants.<\/p>\n
\"Allson takes tenants on a daily basis, but our security
\nguards are required to recognize long-term tenants, who are
\ntherefore not checked every time at the entrance. The guards only
\ncheck visitors in the lobby and before they use the elevators. In
\naddition, there are also cameras in the lobby, he said.<\/p>\n
He said Allson also had videophone security devices, which
\noperates as a multipurpose tool including fire alarm and cameras.<\/p>\n
He said the apartment had a good parking system for both
\ntenants and visitors. Since its initial operation in mid-1997,
\nthere have been no reports of crime, he added.<\/p>\n

Facilities to support security are the most important thing
\nfor any apartment building. This is not only related to security
\ndevices but also to security guards and things such as adequate
\nlighting at entrances and in the parking lot as well as deadlocks
\nand peepholes in doors.<\/p>\n

General manager for marketing of Executive Menteng Apartment,
\nVeri Y. Setiady, said security is one of the major things at his
\napartment. All tenants have access cards, the CCTV operates 24
\nhours a day and visitors must call their hosts on the intercom
\nbefore gaining access.<\/p>\n
He said Executive Menteng Apartment only took tenants on a
\nminimum one-year contract, except for one-bedroom apartments
\nwhich are available for a minimum period of six months.<\/p>\n
With long-term tenants, security is far better because
\noutsiders are immediately recognized, he said.<\/p>\n
According to Setiady, his apartment won an ISO9001 certificate
\nfor service and security from SGS in Geneva. Executive Menteng
\nApartment was the first residential building in Indonesia to
\nreceive such a certificate, he said.<\/p>\n
He added that many staff members from foreign embassies,
\nincluding the United States, stayed at the apartment, therefore
\nExecutive Menteng Apartment's staff had been trained in various
\nprocedures related to security, including handling bomb threats,
\nevacuation and so on.<\/p>\n
Some tips for secure living in apartments:<\/p>\n
* Find out whether the management is serious in providing safety
\nand that the apartment has a good security system.
\n * makes sure all locks on apartment doors offer good security,
\nand that locks are changed when you move in.
\n * Check the doors of the apartment for peepholes.
\n * Don't rely on door chains; they can be forced or opened with
\nspecial tools.
\n * All exterior doors and locks are in good working order.
\n * Learn where all the emergency exits are and all routes of
\nescape in case of fire.
\n * Install an alarm system.
\n * Make sure the fire alarm always works.
\n * Install a fire extinguisher.
\n * Never leave your apartment doors unlocked.
