“What students see, hear, feel, and experience daily is education.”
(KH. Imam Zarkasyi) This adage serves as a constant reminder,
particularly for the students of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, that
everything they do and undertake is part of their education. Education
at Gontor embraces the concept of “holistic education,” or comprehensive
learning. Why is it called holistic education? Because the educational
system at Gontor is not confined to classroom learning. More than that,
all activities and routines the students engage in daily are also
considered education. One such activity is mosque cleaning duty. The
mosque is the central, animating point where various activities are
carried out, such as prayers, studying, gatherings, and so forth. For
this reason, the mosque at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is named
“Masjid Jami.” Masjid Jami’ is a mosque that unites all educational,
worship, and student life activities in a single location. Therefore,
the mosque at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor must be a comfortable,
clean, and tidy place. Herein lies the crucial role of mosque cleaning
duty. Moreover, mosque cleaning duty is not merely a daily work routine
but also an integral part of student character education, particularly
in fostering a sense of responsibility and a spirit of sincerity. Mosque
Cleaning Duty: Building a Sense of Responsibility Responsibility is one
of the essential character traits every student must possess. Through
mosque cleaning duty, students are trained to carry out the trust given
to them to the best of their ability. They learn to arrive on time,
divide tasks with friends, and ensure every corner of the mosque remains
clean and comfortable for use. This activity teaches that every task, no
matter how small, holds value and consequences that must be accounted
for. From this simple habit, students understand that responsibility
applies not only to academic matters but also to maintaining shared
public facilities. This value is expected to remain ingrained in their
lives, both during their time at the pesantren and when they venture
into society. Training the Spirit of Sincerity in Service Besides
building a sense of responsibility, mosque cleaning duty also serves as
a means to instil a spirit of sincerity. The work of cleaning the mosque
is often done without receiving praise or special recognition. Yet,
precisely therein lies its educational value. Students are taught to
work out of awareness and the intention of worshipping Allah SWT, not
because they wish to be seen or praised by others. When sweeping the
floor, tidying congregants’ sandals, cleaning carpets, or wiping the
mosque’s glass, they learn that every deed performed with sincerity
holds value in the sight of Allah. Through this experience, students
understand that sincerity is not merely a theory studied in moral
lessons but a value that must be practised in daily life. Living
Character Education in Students’ Daily Lives Mosque cleaning duty
demonstrates that character education at Gontor is conveyed not only
through advice and classroom learning but also through real experience.
This activity becomes an effective learning medium because students
directly practise the values taught. They learn to cooperate, respect
tasks, maintain discipline, and cultivate care for the environment. From
this seemingly simple activity, various positive character traits emerge
that will become important provisions for their future lives. Thus,
mosque cleaning duty is not just an activity of maintaining cleanliness
but part of an educational process that shapes students into individuals
who are responsible, sincere, and ready to serve the community. Perhaps,
for some people, sweeping the floor, tidying sandals, or cleaning mosque
carpets is merely simple work often underestimated. However, behind this
activity lies an educational process not always found in the classroom.
Through mosque cleaning duty, students learn that responsibility must be
manifested in action, and sincerity must be proven in every task.
Therefore, it is no exaggeration to say that character education at
Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is not only taught through advice but
also shaped through daily life experiences. From these simple activities
emerge individuals accustomed to working selflessly, responsible for
their trust, and ready to provide benefits to society in the future.
",
