Moslem urged to work together<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Religious Affairs Tarmizi Taher said
\nMoslems the world over should work together to fight poverty and
\nilliteracy, and improve the quality of human resources in Islamic
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
\"Moslems from different social and cultural backgrounds
\nthroughout the world should refer to the guidance of the Koran
\nand Hadith (Prophet Muhammad's sayings and deeds) so they are not
\ndivided by political differences,\" Tarmizi said.<\/p>\n
The minister was addressing the closing ceremony for the Sixth
\nConference of Ministers of Awqof (mortmain) and Islamic Affairs
\nof the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) here Saturday.<\/p>\n
He expressed confidence that a solid and integrated Islamic
\nworld would emerge if billions of Moslems united.<\/p>\n
There are some 5.6 billion people in the world and Moslems,
\nalong with Christians, form the largest community, he said.<\/p>\n
However most Christians live in developed countries while
\nMoslems live in developing nations that face problems such as
\npoverty and less access to information and technological
\ndevelopment, he said.<\/p>\n
The conference, opened Wednesday by President Soeharto, also
\nissued Jakarta Message, a communique which appeals for greater
\nattention to Islamic minorities in non-Moslem countries.<\/p>\n
In the six-point message, the ministers agreed to preserve the
\nrights of Islamic communities throughout the world.<\/p>\n
The message also underlined the need for issues concerning
\nreligious, cultural and humanity matters to be given attention
\nand assistance through scientific research and project
\nrealization.<\/p>\n
The next OIC summit in Teheran, Iran, is expected to pay more
\nattention to these less fortunate Islamic communities.<\/p>\n
Malaysia will be hosting the seventh OIC conference of
\nministers of Awqof and Islamic affairs in the year 2000. Prior to
\nthis conference, the OIC's Executive Council is scheduled to meet
\nin Egypt next year. (10)<\/p>",
