Moro-style solution for the Spratlys?<\/p>\n
The settlement of the Moro problem has helped to remind us of
\nthe importance of using peaceful methods. The ratification of the
\npeace accord on Sept. 2 at Manila's Malacanang Palace formally
\nended the armed conflict in the southern Philippines.<\/p>\n
It is interesting to note the remarks which Minister of
\nForeign Affairs Ali Alatas made to reporters after the
\nratification ceremony in Manila. He said the way in which the
\nCambodia and Moro problems were resolved could perhaps serve as a
\nmodel for settling the Spratly Islands dispute.<\/p>\n
The capability of Southeast Asian nations to resolve their
\nproblems in their own manner is something to be proud of.
\nMoreover, the idea of applying a Moro and Cambodia-style of
\nconflict resolution to the Spratly Islands demonstrates the
\ncommitment towards peace that exists among the countries of
\nSoutheast Asia.<\/p>\n
A number of Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines,
\nMalaysia, Vietnam and Brunei are at present embroiled in a
\ndispute caused by overlapping territorial claims to the Spratly
\nIslands. The problem is all the more complicated since China and
\nTaiwan are also laying claim.<\/p>\n
The involvement of six countries in the dispute indeed makes
\nthe Spratly Island problem a tricky one to solve. Nevertheless we
\nare confident that the dispute can be resolved provided that all
\nthe countries involved are willing to choose the peaceful road
\ntowards a settlement over that of armed conflict.<\/p>\n
