        "content": "<p>More violence in Ujungpandang<\/p>\n<p>UJUNGPANDANG (JP): Two people were injured and dozens of<br>\ntraffic lights vandalized in violence here yesterday which marred<br>\nGolkar's third campaign round.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of Golkar supporters smashed traffic lights and<br>\nvandalized two vans after a rally in Sambungjawa soccer field.<\/p>\n<p>It was the second day of mob violence in the town. On Sunday,<br>\nUnited Development Party (PPP) supporters ran amuck, vandalizing<br>\na car and more than 20 shops.<\/p>\n<p>In one of yesterday's incidents, two Golkar supporters were<br>\nmobbed while in a convoy in Ujungtanah subdistrict, a PPP<br>\nstronghold.<\/p>\n<p>Eyewitnesses said hundreds of Ujungtanah residents threw<br>\nstones at the Golkar convoy.<\/p>\n<p>The residents caught Sunandar, 27, and Udin, 41, beat them up<br>\nand stripped them of their yellow Golkar T-shirts, which they<br>\ntore apart.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd dispersed after police arrived. Sunandar and Udin<br>\nwere taken to hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Golkar supporters vandalized traffic lights along the city's<br>\nmain streets. The authorities said they were still estimating the<br>\ndamage bill.<\/p>\n<p>Troops and police blocked streets with trucks to prevent<br>\nGolkar supporters entering strategic zones and other parties'<br>\nstrongholds.<\/p>\n<p>Local military chief Maj. Gen. Agum Gumelar and police chief<br>\nBrig. Gen. Ali Hanafiah said the authorities had the situation<br>\nunder control.<\/p>\n<p>Military officers have vowed to take a harsh punitive actions<br>\nagainst people caught vandalizing public property during the<br>\ncampaign.<\/p>\n<p>Local PPP leaders threatened yesterday to boycott the campaign<br>\ntomorrow unless the authorities investigated a brawl they said<br>\nGolkar activists started with PPP supporters Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Golkar's campaign in the city featured Amiruddin, a native of<br>\nSouth Sulawesi and deputy speaker of the House of Representatives<br>\nin Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>Amiruddin, a former South Sulawesi governor, promised that<br>\nGolkar would help improve locals' living standards.<\/p>\n<p>Golkar campaigns in Palu, Central Sulawesi, yesterday featured<br>\nMinister of Justice Oetojo Oesman, other top government officials<br>\nand businessman Fadel Muhammad.
