More to be made homeless<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): After demolishing about 300 makeshift houses in
\nMarunda and evicting the residents, the North Jakarta Mayoralty
\nannounced on Friday that it planned to demolish more than 500
\nmakeshift houses along the flood canal in Penjaringan area.<\/p>\n
\"The demolition will be conducted soon after we inform the
\nresidents,\" North Jakarta Mayor Soebagio told reporters after
\nmeeting Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso at City Hall.<\/p>\n
He admitted that the mayoralty had failed to prevent the canal
\nbanks from being occupied by the people.<\/p>\n
\"We should have prevented them from the beginning, so that
\nthere would not be hundreds of makeshift houses like there are
\nnow,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In a related development, he claimed that Sutiyoso had
\napproved the mayoralty's action to evict 1,500 illegal residents
\nfrom vacant land in Marunda on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"They are illegal squatters. There is no problem about that,\"
\nSoebagio said.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty public order officers reportedly bulldozed the
\n300 houses and burned them down. Some residents accused the
\nmayoralty of using hoodlums during the demolition.<\/p>\n
The land, which belonged to state-owned industrial estate
\ndeveloper PT Kawasan Berikat Nusantara, was offered to the
\nresidents three years ago for cultivation due to the economic
\ncrisis.<\/p>\n
The developer has asked the residents to leave the land since
