        "content": "<p>More suspected killers murdered in East Java<\/p>\n<p>SURABAYA (JP): Angry mobs killed three more people in Madura<br>\nand Sidoarjo on Wednesday and Tuesday in reprisals against<br>\nindividuals they suspected of involvement in the mysterious<br>\nkilling spree in East Java.<\/p>\n<p>Local police said that Kahar, 30, a resident of Galis district<br>\nin Bangkalan regency, Madura, was mobbed to death early on<br>\nWednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He was attacked on his way to visit a religious leader,<br>\nMasduki, who heads the Cendana Islamic boarding school.<\/p>\n<p>In Sidoarjo, two people were killed on Tuesday because they<br>\nwere suspected of being members of the gangs which have slain<br>\nalleged black magic practitioners and religious leaders. A mob<br>\nattacked the two at the Pondok Candra housing complex.<\/p>\n<p>They were reportedly burned to death and their bodies paraded<br>\nthrough the town's streets. As of Wednesday, the two unidentified<br>\nbodies remained at the morgue of the Sidoarjo general hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Assaults against people suspected by residents of being<br>\nkillers started last Friday, with mobs parading severed victim's<br>\nheads through village streets.<\/p>\n<p>Kompas daily reported on Wednesday that police in Malang had<br>\narrested 54 suspects who were allegedly part of the mobs which<br>\nattacked at least 18 people. The toll from the killing spree,<br>\nwhich has also victimized farmers, is at least 157 people in East<br>\nJava, according to the Committee for Missing Persons and Victims<br>\nof Violence. Police last recorded 142 deaths, mostly in<br>\nBanyuwangi.<\/p>\n<p>The daily also said most of the victims, including suspected<br>\nkillers, had yet to be identified. However, police said most of<br>\nthose killed on suspicion of taking part in the killings had<br>\nsuffered from \"mental disorders\" and some were former psychiatric<br>\ncenter inmates.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at least six journalists covering the gruesome<br>\nmurders in Jember and Banyuwangi reportedly evacuated their<br>\nfamily members on Tuesday after receiving death threats.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said on Tuesday the threats were printed on flyers<br>\nand circulated in Jember.<\/p>\n<p>East Java Governor Imam Utomo said Tuesday he would guarantee<br>\nthe personal safety of journalists reporting on the murders.<\/p>\n<p>As fears mount over the mysterious killings, villagers have<br>\nbegun arming themselves, setting curfews and conducting patrols.<br>\nIn some instances, there have been assaults on people who did not<br>\nhave identity papers or were found wandering alone at night.<\/p>\n<p>A number of Moslem preachers in the Central Java regency of<br>\nBanyumas and Tegal have also received telephone death threats.<\/p>\n<p>Local religious leader Noer Iskandar said on Wednesday that<br>\nabout 300 Moslem clerics from Banyumas regency had gathered<br>\nearlier in the afternoon in the nearby town of Purwokerto and<br>\nagreed to establish security posts in their respective<br>\nneighborhoods.
