More soldiers fired for drugs<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: Two soldiers and a staff official with
\nthe province's Bukit Barisan Military Command were dishonorably
\ndischarged from the military on Monday for their involvement in
\ndrug trafficking.<\/p>\n
Bukit Barisan military commander Maj. Gen. Tri Tamtomo
\npresided over a special ceremony at the headquarters' compound in
\nMedan to mark the dismissal of the three officers, none of whom
\nwill be reported to the police.<\/p>\n
The two discharged soldiers were Chief Pvt. Julham Riadi and
\nFirst Pvt. Irvan Meiwan, while the dismissed civil servant was
\nLamrita Ginting, an official at the command's secretariat.<\/p>\n
Tri Tamtomo said the three were fired because of their roles
\nin illegal drug peddling -- believed to be cannabis.<\/p>\n
"Despite whatever economic reasons they had, they have misused
\ntheir positions to commit a crime. Any military officer or civil
\nservant from the Bukit Barisan Cilitary Command involved in drug
\ncases will face similar punishment," Tri warned.<\/p>\n
He added that at least 70 other soldiers from the regional
\ncommand have in the past year been dismissed for drug
\ntrafficking. It is not clear if the law enforcement authorities
\nhave charged any of them with a criminal drug offense. --JP<\/p>",
