More RI students opt for Australia<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Language, low tuition fees, proximity and safety
\nare some of the reasons why Indonesians choose Australia as the
\ndestination for continuing their studies, an organizer of an
\neducational exhibition said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Indra Lesmana, former organizer of the Indonesian Students'
\nAssociation in Australia, said familiarity with the English
\nlanguage among Indonesian students and the relatively short
\ndistance are prompting an increasing number of students here to
\nstudy in Australian universities.<\/p>\n
Indra was at Jakarta's Aryaduta Hotel as a staff member of the
\nAustralian Universities Expo. The exhibition, which ends today,
\nrepresents 10 state-run Australian universities in New South
\nWales.<\/p>\n
Jane Baker, an exhibition organizer, said that the number of
\nforeigners studying in Australian universities has increased
\nabout 1,000 people per year, making it 6,000 this year, including
\nthose who attend short courses at privately run colleges.<\/p>\n
Supporting Indra's statement, Baker said Indonesian students
\nprefer to study in Australia because all of the universities are
\nrecognized by the Australian government.<\/p>\n
She said most tuition fees are relatively lower, at A$6,000
\n(US$4,500) a year, compared to those in other Western countries.<\/p>\n
In addition, a student must fork out around A$10,000 each year
\nto cover their cost of living.<\/p>\n
Over the past few years, thousands of Indonesian students have
\ngone abroad, usually to English-speaking countries, to study at
\nvarious colleges and universities.<\/p>\n
Most students who can afford to study overseas are from upper
\nmiddle class families. They have to pay very high entrance fees
\nand face tough competition before they can be accepted at
\nreputable universities or higher learning institutions.<\/p>\n
\"The fact that there are many (Asian) immigrants in Australia
\nalso gave confidence to the Indonesian students to study in
\nAustralia,\" Baker said.<\/p>\n
Organizers of the exhibition said that another advantage for
\nIndonesians graduates of overseas universities is that they will
\nget higher salaries than people graduating locally due to their
