More rain to come, BMG official predicts<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Expect more rain. That's the prediction for the
\ncoming week in many areas across the country.<\/p>\n
The Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) head of public
\nrelations, Waan Tarmin, said that the current bout of wet weather
\nwas a natural phenomenon during the transitional period before
\nthe start of a dry season.<\/p>\n
\"The precipitation is caused by the high effectivity of the
\nwarming of the Karimata Straits, the Java Sea, and the Indian
\nOcean which forms a lot of clouds,\" Waan said.<\/p>\n
According to Waan, Sumatra, the western part of Java, West
\nKalimantan, the northern part of East Kalimantan, most of
\nSulawesi Island, north Maluku and most areas in Irian Jaya are
\nlikely to see more moderate to heavy rain, albeit not as heavy
\nthat which hit the capital last week.<\/p>\n
There were reports of heavy rain last week in several areas in
\nBandung regency which flooded thousands of houses, in Kendari
\nwhich ruined vegetable plantations, and in Surabaya which damaged
\nthe tobacco harvest.<\/p>\n
Waan also said that the agency's latest biannual weather
\nforecast predicts that most areas in the country will have a
\n'wet' dry season this year.<\/p>\n
It was expected to come as early as April, due to the rain-
\ninducing phenomenon La Nina.<\/p>\n
When asked about the heavy thundershower which hit Jakarta on
\nThursday, Waan said that there is little chance of a recurrence
\nin the near future.<\/p>\n
\"Such strong storms occur so rarely...So, Jakartans need not
\nworry about it.\"<\/p>\n
Thursday, rain and thunderstorms uprooted several trees, and
\nbroken branches littered busy roads.<\/p>\n
Waan said the phenomenon was generated by the forming of a
\ncumulonimbus cloud at a very high altitude.<\/p>\n
The cloud formed at the wind shift point above Jakarta. There
\nwas a high level of turbulence and that generated a high level of
\nfriction among the ions of the cloud.<\/p>\n
Waan said that the Agency could only forecast such phenomena
\nsix hours in advance.<\/p>\n
\"It's so very little time to inform the mass media, that's why
\nwe only provide information to the airlines.\"(08\/ind)<\/p>",
