More minivans rev up protests<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta administration's policy to
\nallow five more public transport minivans B-06 to ply the Kamal-
\nKota route has met with angry protests from owners of those
\nalready in service.<\/p>\n
Van owners and their employees grouped in Wahana Kalpika
\nCooperative fear that the additional vans, which first hit the
\nroad on April 2, will delete their income.<\/p>\n
They vented their anger in a meeting with cooperative
\nofficials on Thursday in which they demanded that the authorities
\nwithdraw the operation permit of the new vans.<\/p>\n
Earlier this week, drivers had gone on strike to dramatize
\ntheir objection to the additional fleet but there had been no
\nsign the administration would review the permit, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Owners and drivers of the old B-06 vans argued that their
\ndaily income had been meager recently because many regular
\ncustomers lost their jobs in the crisis.<\/p>\n
\"Numbers of passengers are decreasing everyday. What will
\nhappen if more vans are allowed to operate?\" asked Silalahi, the
\nowner of one of the old vans.<\/p>\n
Masban, who represented the cooperative management in the
\nmeeting, said his only recourse was to refer the complaint to the
