        "content": "<p>More minivan drivers go on strike over additional buses<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of public transportation minivan drivers<br>\nwent on strike yesterday causing hundreds of passengers between<br>\nPasar Minggu and Kampung Melayu areas to be stranded.<\/p>\n<p>But passengers still had the option of taking other buses<br>\npassing similar routes.<\/p>\n<p>Several drivers planned to complain to the House of<br>\nRepresentatives over too many additional vans plying similar<br>\nroutes.<\/p>\n<p>They said there were already 400 vans plying route M16 and the<br>\nstrike was triggered by the addition of 20 new vans.<\/p>\n<p>Similar strikes were staged by drivers plying between the<br>\nKampung Melayu and Pulo Gadung terminals, in East Jakarta and in<br>\nBogor.<\/p>\n<p>Streets along Pasar Minggu in South Jakarta and Kampung Melayu<br>\nin East Jakarta were absent of M16 vans, since drivers pooled<br>\ntheir vehicles at the Kampung Melayu terminal at about 6 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Kampung Melayu terminal looked less crowded than usual and<br>\ntraffic congestion was less between the two terminals.<\/p>\n<p>One of the drivers, Darno, said his income had significantly<br>\ndropped since the addition of the new vans.<\/p>\n<p>Soembogo, a staffer of a cooperative which had several M16<br>\nvans, blamed the Organization of Land Transportation Owners<br>\n(Organda), who determined the route, and the City Land<br>\nTransportation Agency (DLLAJ), who issued the permits, without<br>\nconsidering possible consequences.<\/p>\n<p>Organda and DLLAJ have acknowledged that there were too many<br>\noverlapping routes and buses, &quot;but they have behaved<br>\ninconsistently,&quot; Soembogo, of the East Jakarta branch Purimas<br>\nJaya cooperative, said.<\/p>\n<p>Soembogo, also a driver, demanded that the agency evaluate<br>\nevery possible route to prevent unhealthy competition.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Drivers would like to serve the public but drivers demand a<br>\nbetter planned public transportation system,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the Kampung Melayu terminal, Mufreini, said there<br>\nwere many public transportation vehicles with overlapping routes<br>\nwhich lead to Pasar Minggu.<\/p>\n<p>He expected conditions would return to normal today.<\/p>\n<p>In Bogor, 300 minivans went on strike because too many new<br>\nbuses were operating the Sukasari-Merdeka route.<\/p>\n<p>Bagio, one of the drivers, said his income had dropped from Rp<br>\n15,000 a day to Rp 10,000 a day.<\/p>\n<p>Rumors were spreading about new medium-sized buses operating<br>\non a similar route, but the local transportation agency said<br>\ntheir office had not issued any permit for a new route since<br>\nDecember.<\/p>\n<p>Endang Tabroni, the head of the agency, said the Bogor<br>\ntownship had 1,885 public transport vehicles.
