More loot returned in W. Jakarta<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The West Jakarta military district handed over
\nto the West Jakarta mayoralty Wednesday more goods it had
\nconfiscated from looters during the recent riots.<\/p>\n
Five televisions, two diesel engines, 27 tires and Rp 7.32
\nmillion in cash were presented by military district commander Lt.
\nCol. Amril Amir to Mayor H. Soetardjianto.<\/p>\n
Amril said that the booty, whose owners had not been
\nidentified, were taken from shopping centers and private
\nresidences during the unrest, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
He said that 557 alleged looters and two trucks of stolen
\nproperty were being held at the West Jakarta police station
\npending further investigation.<\/p>\n
Both Amril and Soetardjianto urged the people who took part in
\nlooting spree to return the goods to local subdistrict officials.<\/p>\n
Soetardjianto said that looters who gave up their booty
\nvoluntarily would not be prosecuted.<\/p>\n
He also said that he would apply stern measures against his
\nofficials who stole the returned goods and failed to pass them on
\nto the rightful owners.<\/p>\n
\"They should not try to pinch those things, I will take
\npunitive measure against them. If necessary, I'll not hesitate to
\nfire them.\"<\/p>\n
The mayor said that victims of the looting who wanted to check
\nif their stolen possessions had been returned should take
\nrecommendation letters to the mayoralty office from their local
\nneighborhood chief.<\/p>\n
Soetardjianto said that of the 2,000 electronic goods and home
\nappliances submitted to the local administration, 1,000 had been
