More legislators skip selection of KPI members<\/p>\n

More members of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I
\nfor communications and information skipped Friday's hearing to
\nselect members of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI),
\nraising concerns over the quality of the selection process.<\/p>\n
Of the 55 members of the subcommission, only 14 showed up in
\nthe morning, that number decreased to 12 in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
On the first day of the hearing on Thursday, only 19
\nsubcommission members were in attendance.<\/p>\n
"Of course, the absence of many legislators from the selection
\nprocess will reduce the quality of the process. I will ask them
\nto appear at the next hearing," commission deputy chairman
\nEffendy Choirie said after the hearing.<\/p>\n
The selection process will continue until Dec. 11. On Dec. 12
\nthe nine eligible candidates, of the 27 candidates President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri submitted earlier, will be announced.<\/p>\n
The names of the nine candidates will then be handed to the
\nPresident for inauguration.<\/p>\n
Effendy of the National Awakening Party (PKB) said that the
\nselection of KPI members was an important issue, therefore the
\nlegislators should make attendance a priority.<\/p>\n
Commission member Paulus Widiyanto of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) claimed that many
\nmembers were in Surabaya, East Java, attending a military
\ncelebration.<\/p>\n
Six candidates presented their vision and mission on Friday to
\nthe legislators.<\/p>\n
They were Amelia Hezkasari (a housewife), Henri Subiakto (a
\nlecturer at Airlangga University in Surabaya), S. Sinansari Ecip
\n(a lecturer at Hasanuddin University), Ade Armando (a lecturer at
\nthe University of Indonesia), Anton A. Nangoy (an activist with a
\ntelevision association), and Wolly Baktiono (an employee of a
\nradio station in Surabaya).<\/p>\n
Five candidates were grilled on Thursday.<\/p>\n
After examining 11 candidates, both Effendy and Paulus said,
\nthat according to their evaluation, there were four eligible
\ncandidates.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, media analyst Hinca Panjaitan, who monitored the
\nselection process, said that at least two candidates were
\neligible to be members of KPI.<\/p>\n
He added that his group would monitor the whole selection
\nprocess and rate the quality of both the candidates and the
\nselection process.<\/p>\n
The establishment of KPI is stipulated by the law No.31\/2002
\non broadcasting. Several candidates are figures who strongly
\noppose the broadcasting law.<\/p>\n
Legislators questioned the integrity of those candidates and
\nsaid that they would give those candidates last priority.<\/p>",
