More Indonesian Workers in Singapore Commit Suicide

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: The number of Indonesian workers (TKI) in Singapore committing suicide has increased.<\/p>\n
Fachry Sulaiman, Head of the Consular Section at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore, said that in addition to death by suicide, workers also died due to traffic and work accidents.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe suicide rate is up,\u201d said Fachry during a discussion about the situation regarding the development of Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore and Malaysia, at the National Human Rights Commission for Women, Central Jakarta, yesterday (17\/5).<\/p>\n
According to him, 10 people have died so far this year, eight by suicide.<\/p>\n
Regarding the Indonesian workers who committed suicide, Fachry said that most of them had been in touch with their homes.<\/p>\n
From this contact, they had received information about their families' conditions.<\/p>\n
Fachry cited disloyal husbands, families asking for more money, and undelivered money.<\/p>\n
As a result, the workers concerned became depressed.<\/p>\n
