More fund needed to widen sidewalk on Jl. Thamrin<\/p>\n

The sidewalk along Jl. Thamrin is being widened step-by-step,
\nwhile 12 of 32 sections are finished, the city administration
\nsays the project will not be completed until the year's end.<\/p>\n
In addition, it says that Rp 10 billion (US$1.10 million),
\nwhich was allocated for the project, is not enough money to see
\nit through.<\/p>\n
\"When we designed the project we had counted on financial
\nsupport from private parties. But, the reality is that the
\nadministration has been left with financing most of the work,\"
\nAssistant to the City Secretary for Development Affairs IGKG
\nSuena, said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He did not say how much extra money was required.<\/p>\n
\"Although we are facing a budget deficit, we still aim to
\ncomplete the project by the end of this year,\" he said.<\/p>\n
City spokesman Muhayat said that the City Planning Agency was
\ncalculating the deficit and would use emergency funds to make it
\nup.<\/p>\n
According to him, Sutiyoso had asked City Parks Agency head
\nSarwo Handhayani to speed up the process, by prioritizing
\nsections of the sidewalk in front of buildings whose owners were
\nsupportive.<\/p>\n
\"The governor said the parks agency should put aside all
\nadministrative work in order to finish the project, since it is
\nrelated to public interests,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Muhayat said the sidewalk in front of the Bank Indonesia (BI)
\ncomplex would not be widened until state budget funds had been
\ndisbursed.<\/p>\n
Only 37.5 percent of the project has been completed, with the
\nsidewalk in front of the Japanese Embassy, Hotel Nikko, Plaza
\nIndonesia and Plaza eX (PT Nusantara Plaza Realti) among sections
\nthat have not been widened.<\/p>\n
Six other building owners are still negotiating with the
\nadministration, while 14 building owners have agreed to back the
\nproject.<\/p>\n
The embassies of France, Germany and England, as well as the
\nUnited Nations office, have objected to the plan, due to security
\nconcerns.<\/p>\n
Once the sidewalk along Jl. Thamrin has been widened, the
\nadministration will focus on Jl. Sudirman.<\/p>\n
\"In the next three years, we also plan to widen the sidewalk
\nalong Jl. Rasuna Said,\" Suena said.<\/p>\n
Most of the sidewalk will look the same, with brick-red
\nconcrete slabs bordered by basalt stonework.<\/p>\n
