More expats found dead in Jakarta<\/p>\n

Alone in Jakarta during business trips, or on short-time working
\ncontracts, foreigners are increasingly becoming targets for
\ncrime.<\/p>\n
Less than two weeks after German and Australian nationals were
\nmurdered in their rented houses, a Japanese identified as Isamu
\nOtsu was found dead last Friday in Park Lane Hotel, South
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Although there were no signs of violence found on Otsu's body
\n-- who was found lying face down in the bathroom with blood
\naround his nose -- police have not ruled out the possibility that
\nhe was murdered.<\/p>\n
"We are still waiting for laboratory results. We have also
\nquestioned several witnesses and examined other evidence,"
\ngeneral crimes unit chief at the Jakarta Police Sr. Comr. Suhardi
\nAlius told The Jakarta Post on Sunday.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 22, German citizen Helmut Kleinen was found dead in
\nhis bedroom in his rented house in Jl. Bangka, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
On the same day, police arrested Kleinen's domestic helper and
\nthe latter's two friends as suspects of murder.<\/p>\n
Earlier in mid August, Australian Frans Luis Merre, 70, was
\nfound dead in his house in the Tugu subdistrict of Depok.<\/p>\n
Police suspect that the Australian was murdered by relatives
\nof his domestic helper. Police said that they were still trying
\nto find their whereabouts.<\/p>\n
This year, several foreigners from South Korea, Russia, and
\nJapan, have been found dead in their hotels, apartments or rented
\nhouses.<\/p>\n
"We acknowledge that foreign nationals are being targeted by
\ncriminals as many live alone and isolate themselves from their
\nsurrounding area. Criminals will take advantage of such a
\nsituation," Suhardi said.<\/p>\n
He added that sometimes it could be many days before the
\npolice became aware that a foreign resident had been murdered.<\/p>\n
"We do in fact take special security measures to protect
\ncertain areas where foreigners live, but we can't guard them one
\nby one because of limited numbers of personnel," he said.<\/p>\n
"Foreign nationals should select helpers or assistants
\ncarefully to make sure they can be trusted."<\/p>",
