Jakarta: The backfilling method used in mining activities is\nconsidered an appropriate choice as it prioritises safety and\nenvironmental protection. This method is being utilised by PT Dairi\nPrima Mineral (DPM) and has received approval from the Ministry of\nEnvironment (KLH). The sustainability of the project is also expected to\ncreate multiplier effects for the communities surrounding the mining\narea.<\/p>\n
Mining and energy observer Ferdy Hasiman stated that the approval\nfrom the Ministry of Environment indicates that DPM\u2019s plan to implement\nbackfilling has undergone a rigorous study process. The method is deemed\nsafer and more environmentally friendly, providing a foundation for DPM\nto continue its investment activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cBackfilling is safer and more environmentally friendly. This is the\nright choice for DPM. The Ministry, in this case, the Ministry of\nEnvironment (KLH), has certainly seen a mature process from DPM,\u201d Ferdy\nsaid in a written statement on Wednesday, 2 September 2026.<\/p>\n
Driving investment into Indonesia<\/p>\n
Ferdy noted that the continuity of the DPM project is vital for\naccelerating investment. Furthermore, DPM has established a partnership\nwith China, which is seen as having the potential to bring significant\ninvestment and provide economic impacts to the surrounding regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hope this project can proceed. This creates a multiplier effect.\nLarge-scale miners follow best mining practices. Therefore, if this\nproceeds, DPM will be a positive force,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
According to Ferdy, the realisation of the project is increasingly\nimportant amidst the challenges of slowing foreign investment in\nIndonesia. Ongoing investments are expected to not only benefit the\ncompany but also create economic activity and business opportunities for\nthe people living near the mining area.<\/p>\n
From a technical and environmental perspective, LAPI ITB expert Irwan\nIskandar stated that DPM\u2019s management refers to studies on disaster,\ngeology, hydrology, engineering geology, and environmental protection.\nHe assessed that the management has considered aspects of science,\ntechnology, and environmental preservation.<\/p>\n
One of the technologies applied is paste backfilling, where material\nis mixed with cement and then pumped back into mine openings, including\nlonghole stoping areas. This method functions to maintain underground\nstability, control voids, minimise the risk of subsidence, and prevent\nthe formation of acid mine drainage.<\/p>\n
Integrated water management<\/p>\n
The use of the backfilling method also allows for more integrated\nwater management. Because it does not utilise tailings dams,\ndisturbances to surface water can be suppressed.<\/p>\n
Refilling material into the mining area also helps control the\ndecline of groundwater levels. Residual mining materials can be reused\nto fill empty spaces underground.<\/p>\n
To ensure environmental management is maintained, DPM will install\napproximately 10 monitoring wells around the underground mine openings.\nThese wells will be used to monitor changes in groundwater and serve as\na basis for evaluation if significant changes are detected.<\/p>\n
Irwan assessed that backfilling technology is a strategic approach\nthat has the potential to be applied to other mining activities. With\ntechnical, technological, and environmental aspects being met, the DPM\nproject is deemed to have a solid foundation to proceed.
