        "content": "<p>More attention to the environment<\/p>\n<p>From Sinar Pagi<\/p>\n<p>Instant noodle company PT Indofood Sukses Makmur (ISM) has a<br>\nfactory in West Ancol, North Jakarta. With the ISO standard it<br>\nhas achieved, the company should adopt an attitude of hospitality<br>\nand concern for its environment without discrimination, but so<br>\nfar the opposite has happened. Its lack of concern is apparent in<br>\nthe long-ignored complaints lodged by local residents about the<br>\ninstallation of 15 large vents directly opposite their homes,<br>\nwhere they have suffered the impact of heat and noise around the<br>\nclock for over two years (except on holidays).<\/p>\n<p>The company's discriminatory hiring practices, in which locals<br>\nfind it difficult, even impossible, to get a job at this factory.<br>\nThose working as sweepers outside the fences of the factory<br>\ncompound earn Rp 80,000 per month, even though they have been<br>\nworking for the company for more than five years.<\/p>\n<p>The company's social contributions and activities frequently<br>\nreported by the mass media have never included the people living<br>\nnear the company, who guarded PT ISM against rioters in May 1998.<\/p>\n<p>The nuisance complaint was once discussed at a meeting with<br>\nthe firm's representatives, resulting in a consensus to do<br>\nsomething about the noise caused by the vents. This agreement<br>\nseems to have fallen into oblivion, though.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, we local residents remained rational and,<br>\nwithout resorting to violence, held discussions under the<br>\nauspices of the Ancol Industrial Community Association. Yet we<br>\nwere again frustrated<\/p>\n<p>We are convinced that PT ISM's personnel department's lack of<br>\nsensitivity for its neighborhood is not in conformity with the<br>\npolicies of the central management of PT ISM.
