        "content": "<p>Moody's downgrades KL banks<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters): Rating agency Moody's Investors<br>\nService downgraded the debt, deposit and bank financial strength<br>\nratings of five major Malaysian banks on Monday, dealing a fresh<br>\nblow to the country's battered banking sector.<\/p>\n<p>Moody's also placed those same ratings under review for<br>\npossible further downgrades.<\/p>\n<p>The rating agency said the banks downgraded were Malayan<br>\nBanking Bhd (Maybank), Bank Bumiputra Bhd, Public Bank Bhd, RHB<br>\nBank Bhd and Sime Bank Bhd.<\/p>\n<p>Moody's said the downgrades reflected the increasing risk to<br>\ncreditors of Malaysian entities following the economic policy<br>\nmeasures announced by the government.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia recently imposed sweeping capital controls in a bid<br>\nto insulate its recession-hit economy from global instability and<br>\nshield its ringgit currency from speculators, blamed by the<br>\ngovernment for Asia's financial turmoil.<\/p>\n<p>The banking sector, faced by growing non-performing loans<br>\n(NPLs), has been badly-hit by the crisis with the profits of some<br>\ndipping into the red.<\/p>",
