        "content": "<p>Monopoly muddle<\/p>\n<p>From Merdeka<\/p>\n<p>It has been distressing to read statements in the media made<br>\nby leaders of the community, general affairs analysts and, in<br>\nparticular, economic and political experts following President<br>\nSoeharto's state address on Aug. 16.<\/p>\n<p>Cases in point:<\/p>\n<p>1. Initiators and policymakers, who introduced the monopoly<br>\npolicy and have been the champions of this policy for over three<br>\ndecades, now believe it should be scrapped.<\/p>\n<p>2. It has been proven that at the leadership level in the state's<br>\nhighest institutions, a consensus has been reached on appeal that<br>\nthe present governmental system and development policy should<br>\nstay because they are considered correct. We know full well,<br>\nhowever, that the legal foundation of our national development<br>\nuntil now has been Wetboek van Koophandel (commercial code) and<br>\nBurgerlijk Wetbook (civil code), legacies of the Dutch era which<br>\nwas inevitably capitalistic and imperialistic in nature.<\/p>\n<p>3. In reality, no institutions, government agencies, social<br>\norganizations or experts in any field (but particularly in law<br>\nand economics) have been brave enough to voice an opinion if they<br>\nknow this runs counter to the powers that be. This is evidence<br>\nthat the truth has been lost.<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned facts should not only be a cause of grief,<br>\nbut should also provoke questions of their own.<\/p>\n<p>ALPPHONSUS P.
