Monopoly at Tanjung Priok<\/p>\n

On July 1, 2000, Kompas reported that the president director
\nof Humpuss Terminal Petikemas stated that Ocean Investment Ltd, a
\nsubsidiary of Hutchison Whampoa had won the tender to buy all of
\nPT Humpuss Terminal Petikemas's shares. The fact that Hutchison
\nnow managers two container terminals (JITC and KOJA) at Tanjung
\nPriok is worrying to us as a national company that uses the port
\nmore than any other does.<\/p>\n
What Hutchison, a foreign company, is doing is obviously
\nmonopolistic. It should be noted that 70 percent of the cargo
\nfrom all over Indonesia goes through Tanjung Priok. In the chief
\nseaports in our neighboring countries like the Philippines
\n(Manila), Thailand (Laem Chabang) and Malaysia (Port Klang),
\ncontainer terminals are managed by two or more companies.<\/p>\n
Therefore, we would like to call on members of the House of
\nPeople's Representatives and the Indonesian government to prevent
\nthis monopolistic practice from continuing. It is our hope that
\nthe spirit of reform in which the monopolistic ways of Indonesian
\ncompanies will be done away with, will also lead to the scrapping
\nof monopolistic practices of foreign companies, particularly
\nthose at Tanjung Priok.<\/p>\n
