Monkeys threaten power supply<\/p>\n
NEW DELHI (DPA): Monkeys are emerging as a threat to
\nelectricity supply in the power-cut prone Indian capital and
\ntheir penchant for causing blackouts has not spared even the
\nfederal president and the prime minister, reports said.<\/p>\n
Senior officials have asked the New Delhi Municipal Committee
\n(NDMC), which supplies power to the VIP areas, to immediately
\nappoint monkey catchers to tackle the growing menace of the
\nsimians which tend to jump over transformers causing short
\ncircuits.<\/p>\n
This was necessary to prevent damages worth hundreds of
\nthousands of rupees, the Hindustan Times newspaper reported
\nquoting a senior NDMC official.<\/p>\n
\"Ever month they jump over the transformers and high tension
\ntransmission lines. The transformers trip as soon as the monkeys
\njump on them,\" NDMC's chief electrical engineer M.R.Saini said.<\/p>\n
\"The transformers are guarded from all the sides but what do
\nwe do about the roofs?\" Saini asked.<\/p>\n
Saini said there are hordes of monkeys in the area where the
\ntransformer supplying power to the president's and prime
\nminister's houses are located.<\/p>\n
\"They jump on the transformer and it trips immediately. Though
\nthe supply to the president's and prime minister's houses is
\nensured by other transformers, such constant tripping is not good
\nfor the electricity supply,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Saini said earlier the NDMC used to employ monkey catchers.
\nBut the posts were lying vacant now and the monkey population has
\nincreased by leaps and bounds.<\/p>\n
Press reports had earlier said that there were no takers for
\nthe jobs of monkey catchers because Hindus revere the simians as
\nincarnations of the Monkey god Hanuman and consider it a sin to
\nharm them.<\/p>",
