Monas park undergoes major renovations<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is currently renovating
\nthe National Monument (Monas) park to protect the monument from
\nthe vibrations of passing vehicles.<\/p>\n
Rusdi Yusuf, a City Development Planning Board official, said
\nyesterday that the square surrounding the monument will be
\nenlarged.<\/p>\n
The roads encircling the monument will be moved 45 meters away
\nfrom where they are currently to reduce the negative traffic
\neffects, he said,<\/p>\n
He said that the project, currently underway, is expected to
\nbe completed by the end of 1997.<\/p>\n
"The basic construction of roads in the southern and western
\nparts of the monument has already been completed," Rusdi said
\nafter accompanying Governor Surjadi Soedirdja on an inspection on
\nthe project.<\/p>\n
The project is part of the city administration's plan to
\nbeautify the Medan Merdeka park area and to control development
\nin the surrounding areas.<\/p>\n
Various tree species have so far been planted in the park to
\nmake the area more of a city "forest".<\/p>\n
Underground parking lots to the south and west of the monument
\nare also in the works.<\/p>\n
"No information is available as to when the construction of
\nthe parking facilities will start. There is a possibility that
\nthe facilities will be integrated with the upcoming subway system
\npassing the eastern part of the area," Rusdi said. (yns)<\/p>",
