Monas gas station may operate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso decided yesterday to allow a
\ngas station located in the National Monument (Monas) park in
\nCentral Jakarta to operate temporarily until the completion of an
\nunderground parking lot in the area.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso was quoted by City Hall spokesman Kamaluddin Santos
\nas saying that the existence of the gas station would be
\ntolerated until the construction of the underground parking lot
\nwas completed between 1998 and 2000.<\/p>\n
\"The Monas park is determined as a green area so any buildings
\nthere are temporary,\" said Sutiyoso after leading a meeting on
\nthe upgrading of Medan Merdeka Square, where Monas is located.<\/p>\n
The existence of the gas station in the Monas park sparked
\ncontroversy because the area is a designated green area.<\/p>\n
Commenting on the governor's decision, the head of City
\nCouncil Commission C for financial affairs, Amarullah Asbah,
\nshrugged and said: \"Councilors had expressed their objections,
\nbut implementation is up to the executives.\"<\/p>\n
The head of Commission E for welfare affairs, Soeparmo, said
\nthe action taken by the municipality was the best way for now.<\/p>\n
\"It's already built. What can we do about it? Right now the
\ndecision to revoke the gas station's license is in the hands of
\nthe governor,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Let's wait and see,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The station was jointly built by private firm PT Otogas Karya
\nPratama and the municipality.<\/p>\n
It was reported that the governor had been scheduled to
\ninaugurate the gas station on Oct. 27, but Kamaluddin denied the
