Moerdiono slams journalists<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono turned the
\ntable on journalists, chiding them for confusing their own
\nopinions with facts.<\/p>\n
\"Many journalists can't differentiate facts from opinion,\" he
\nsaid while addressing the celebration of the 59th anniversary of
\nthe state-owned news agency Antara.<\/p>\n
\"It's the journalists that usually criticize the government.
\nToday, it's my turn. I want to criticize journalists,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He cited how a local newspaper once quoted him but failed to
\ncatch the essence of his remarks and later made conclusion based
\non the journalist's own opinion. He failed to identify the
\nnewspaper.<\/p>\n
\"I've never felt more sorry. That journalists made his own
\nconclusion (from my statements),\" he said. \"The day after, the
\nnewspaper revised its story but said 'Moerdiono revised his
\ncomments on the subject. It's the journalist who revised the
\nstory, not me.\"<\/p>\n
Speaking to 700 employees of the news agency, he suggested
\nthat they improve professionalism in order to survive the
\nincreasingly fierce competition brought about by modernization
\nand globalization.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono is the chief of the advisory board of the Antara
\nnews agency.<\/p>\n
\"What's important now is how the agency can survive,\" he
\nreiterated. \"In my capacity as a member of the advisory board, I
\ndon't know how much financial support the agency receives from
\nthe government.<\/p>\n
\"However, I know for a fact that the state budget (for the
\nagency) is decreasing,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In the ceremony, Moerdiono presented 29 employees with medals
\nas appreciation for their service at the agency for 15, 20, and
\n30 years.<\/p>\n
Antara was founded on Dec. 13, 1937 in Batavia (former name of
\nJakarta) by Adam Malik (who later became vice president), Pandoe
\nKartawigoena, Soemanang and Albert M. Sipahoetar. (03)<\/p>",
