Moerdiono says no new sports center planned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister\/State Secretary Moerdiono yesterday
\ncategorically denied rumors that the government is planning to
\nbuild a new sports complex which will be bigger and more complete
\nthan the existing one in Senayan.<\/p>\n
Moerdiono, who heads the agency which manages the Senayan
\ncomplex, said he welcomed any private initiatives to build sports
\nfacilities in Jakarta provided they don't use the name \"Senayan
\nII\".<\/p>\n
He told a hearing with the House of Representatives that the
\nexisting sports facilities in Senayan are deemed adequate for
\npresent needs and cover virtually all sports branches.<\/p>\n
The only exceptions are water and air sports. These facilities
\nhave been built outside the complex and are not managed by the
\nSenayan agency, he said.<\/p>\n
Rumors about a Senayan II project in the Cipulir\/Ciledug area
\nin South Jakarta has persistently surfaced in recent years,
\ncausing apprehension among residents in the two districts because
\nland speculators have been lurking in their area.<\/p>\n
The rumors gained currency as Indonesia appears to be bidding
\nto host the Asian Games early next century.<\/p>\n
The issue was brought up by members of the House's Commission
\nII, which deals with domestic politics, during the hearing with
\nMoerdiono yesterday.<\/p>\n
No urgency<\/p>\n
The agency did not see any urgency for building a new sports
\ncomplex, at least in the foreseeable future, the minister said.
\n\"The condition of the Senayan Sports Complex is still quite good
\nand is technically acceptable.\"<\/p>\n
The Senayan agency will continue to upgrade, renovate and
\nrepair the facilities in the complex, he said, adding that one of
\nthe new facilities being considered is indoor tennis.<\/p>\n
He also promised that the Senayan management agency will
\ncontinue to improve the services provided to the public.<\/p>\n
The Senayan sports complex does not receive any government
\nfunding and is financed entirely by the fees it charges the
\npublic, he said.<\/p>\n
The management will continue to make sure that the fees are
