Modest celebrations urged in Aceh<\/p>\n
BANDA ACEH, Aceh: The police here appealed on Monday to all
\nsides, including foreigners, to celebrate New Year's in Aceh
\nmodestly.<\/p>\n
\"We ask people and foreigners here on humanitarian missions
\nnot to stage major events, particularly to welcome the new year
\nin the province,\" Aceh Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Djoko Turochman
\nsaid in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital city.<\/p>\n
He said mass celebrations could disturb people living in the
\nvicinity and those who organized them were subject to criminal
\ncharges.<\/p>\n
\"Our state law stipulates that to stage any event one must
\nobtain permission. So it's clear that if any celebration disturbs
\nthe peace, it is against the law,\" Djoko said.<\/p>\n
He said there would be no Christmas and New Year's
\ncelebrations in Aceh -- a devout Muslim province -- as in other
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Local legislative councillors supported the police's
\nsuggestion. \"I call on all sides to commemorate the first
\nanniversary of the Dec. 26 tsunami by not holding events that
\nlead to revelry and mubadzir (uselessness) because it is against
\nsharia,\" Aceh legislative council member Jamaluddin T. Muku said.
