        "content": "<p>Models draw attention to rates plan<\/p>\n<p>Abdul Khalik, The Jakarta Post\/Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Hundreds of women, from stay-at-home mothers to models, gathered<br>\non Monday at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central<br>\nJakarta to protest state power firm PT PLN's plan to raise<br>\nelectricity rates.<\/p>\n<p>During the rally, the protesters, calling themselves the<br>\nWomen's Alliance for Electricity Awareness (Appel), brought up<br>\nseveral issues, including inefficiency and alleged graft in<br>\nthe company.<\/p>\n<p>\"We object to their plan to raise electricity rates. We want<br>\nthem to be professional. We want all alleged graft cases in PLN<br>\nto be resolved as soon as possible,\" said Irma Selia Malik, the<br>\ncoordinator of the rally.<\/p>\n<p>Many protesters held up posters and banners condemning the<br>\nplan and demanded a thorough investigation into the many alleged<br>\ngraft cases in PLN.<\/p>\n<p>The protesters said they had heard that PLN had proposed its<br>\nplan to raise electricity rates to the government, despite the<br>\nfact that the company's performance had been disappointing,<br>\nincluding the blackout in Java and Bali last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Although the government announced late last month that it<br>\nwould allow PLN to raise its rates, it said that rates imposed on<br>\nhouseholds, small and medium enterprises and public<br>\ntransportation owners would not be increased.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, several PLN directors were summoned by the Attorney<br>\nGeneral's Office for distributing bonuses when the company failed<br>\nto make a profit last year.<\/p>\n<p>The regulations clearly state that bonuses must not be given<br>\nif a state company does not make a profit.<\/p>\n<p>In spite of the investigation, no PLN director was named a<br>\nsuspect and the probe seems to have gone nowhere.<\/p>\n<p>Appel also said that markups had occurred in many of PLN's<br>\nprojects, including the Cisiri and Cilacap projects in West Java.<\/p>\n<p>At least 50 models wearing short skirts helped Appel<br>\ndistribute fliers and stickers to motorists.<\/p>\n<p>Many motorists and pedestrians stopped to approach the models<br>\nfor fliers and stickers, causing traffic congestion along Jl.<br>\nThamrin.<\/p>",
