Model driver contest aimed at improving discipline<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Awards will continue to be presented to
\nexemplary drivers to improve their sense of discipline on the
\nroad and help ease traffic jams in the city, a police official
\nhas said.<\/p>\n
Head of the Jakarta Traffic Police Col. Arsyan Roem said the
\ncity's traffic jams were mostly caused by undisciplined drivers.<\/p>\n
\"We believe that such awards may reduce traffic jams in the
\ncity,\" Arsyan said at the model driver award ceremony, held by
\nthe city police in cooperation with Dai-ichi Hotel over the
\nweekend. The ceremony coincided with the 50th anniversary of the
\npolice force.<\/p>\n
Arsyan said that the 27 drivers taking part in the contest
\nwere selected by their companies before a contest committee began
\ntesting them.<\/p>\n
The contestants, who are bus and taxi drivers, should pass a
\nwritten test, psychology test and simulator test, he said<\/p>\n
\"With several objective tests, I'm sure they are really good
\ndrivers,\" he added.<\/p>\n
On Thursday night, three taxi drivers and three bus drivers
\nwere chosen as the best drivers. Widi Riyanto and Sutiyono of
\nBlue Bird taxi and M. Yamin of Kosti Jaya taxi were awarded as
\nthe first, second and third best taxi drivers respectively. The
\nfirst, second and third best bus drivers were Suyatno of Mayasari
\nBakti, Haryanto of Bianglala and Supodo of PPD bus, respectively.<\/p>\n
Contest<\/p>\n
Aip Syarifuddin, chairman of the City Land Transportation
\nOrganization (Organda), said the winners will be suggested as
\ncandidates for a similar contest to be held by the city
\nadministration and the organization.<\/p>\n
\"The contest will be held in July, and the national-level
\ncontest will be in August,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Arsyan expressed thankfulness to private company Dai-ichi for
\nits support of the driver contest.<\/p>\n
\"I hope there will be more companies supporting this kind of
\ncontest,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Dai-ichi's general manager, Toshio Yamada, said the hotel's
\nmanagement is interested in sponsoring the city in the
\nenforcement of the national discipline movement.<\/p>\n
Widi, the best taxi driver, said that he will improve his
\ndiscipline on the roads, adding that he has been working at Blue
\nBird for seven years.<\/p>\n
Suyatno, the best bus driver, said that the lack of discipline
\namong drivers stems from their low-educational backgrounds.<\/p>\n
Suyanto, a high school graduate, has been working for Mayasari
\nBhakti for 12 years.<\/p>\n
Both Widi and Suyatno will use their prize money of Rp 1
\nmillion (US$425) each for their children's education. Widi has
