Mobile working system to enhance productivity<\/p>\n

The efficient use of time and money is essential for Jakartans
\nstruggling to get to work amid notorious traffic congestion.<\/p>\n
With studies showing the average traveling speed in the
\ncapital is 14.75 kilometers an hour, several major companies have
\nset up a mobile working system that enables their employees to
\nwork outside the office.<\/p>\n
As well as blue collar and white collar workers, the system
\nsuits the new group of \"collarless\" employees who do their work
\nat home or from a more convenient location.<\/p>\n
\"Coming to the office prior to a meeting with clients is a
\nwaste of time. Employees don't have to do that anymore. They can
\ndo their work anytime, anywhere without sacrificing their quality
\ntime with their families,\" said Irfan Setiaputra, the managing
\ndirector of Cisco Systems Indonesia, a local arm of California-
\nbased Cisco System Inc.<\/p>\n
The mobile system uses Internet Protocol (IP) Telephony, the
\ncommunications foundation of the Internet, which is used to
\ntransport voice and other kinds of data, and Virtual Private
\nNetwork (VPN), which accommodates the needs of remote employers
\nand distant offices.<\/p>\n
The Internet and network system company understands that a
\nmobile working system could improve the company's sales
\nactivities, enhance customer satisfaction, create savings, better
\ncontrol of businesses and increase employee's productivity.<\/p>\n
\"(By applying the system) we expect between 30 percent and 40
\npercent increase in employees' productivity,\" he said, adding
\nthat Cisco is applying the system and encouraging its workers to
\nwork out of the office to build better relations with potential
\nclients.<\/p>\n
To apply the IP Telephony, Irfan explained, a company should
\nhave Internet basis with back-end system where all complex data,
\ntransaction processing, application development, system
\narchitecture and integration work take place.<\/p>\n
\"The cost of building the system ranges from US$25,000 to
\n$50,000. It can even cost up to $5 million, depending on the
\namount of connections to the PCs, number of employees and if the
\ncompany has purchased it to be sold to other vendors,\" said
\nIrfan.<\/p>\n
Cisco's clients -- mostly multinational companies in oil and
\ngas and banking sectors -- have applied the mobile working system
\nusing IP Telephony.<\/p>\n
Nazri, an IT manager at an automotive company using IP
\nTelephony, said the system has helped his company to make long-
\ndistance connections with representative offices located outside
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Even though the system enables the company to save on
\nconnection costs we are still having some trouble operating the
\nhardware,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Achmad, 43, an employee at a multinational oil company in
\nCentral Jakarta, said that instead of using IP Telephony, his
\ncompany is using a leased-line connection, which supports the use
\nof VoIP.<\/p>\n
\"We have been using the leased-line for quite a while. This
\nkind of system enables us to connect to our offices in remote
\nareas as well as abroad,\" said Achmad, who has experienced the
\nadvantages of using a leased-line when he was on duty in Korea.<\/p>\n
He pointed that IP Telephony was not useful for behind-the-
\ndesk employees like himself.<\/p>\n
\"The system is useful for those dealing with marketing and
\nclients. Even people who have the possibility to work outside the
\noffice are better to choose the regular dial-up connection,\" said
