Mob executes man by burning alive<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: In yet another case of vigilante justice, a group
\nof neighbors attacked and burned to death on Thursday night an
\nunidentified man, after one person judged that a crime might be
\ntaking place and thus sent out the alarm to the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
It was suspected that the unidentified man was trying to steal
\na motorcycle from an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver in Dumpit
\nvillage, Jatiuwung district, Tangerang.<\/p>\n
Tangerang Police detective deputy chief Insp. Kustanto said on
\nFriday that the suspect approached Hamdani, 41, the ojek driver,
\nwho was waiting for passengers, and held up a knife while asking
\nthe victim to give him the motorcycle.<\/p>\n
"Wadi, 39, Hamdani's fellow driver claimed he witnessed the
\nincident and instantly shouted maling, thief! Immediately, dozens
\nof locals rushed out of their homes and shops and spontaneously
\nmobbed the suspect," Kustanto recounted from witness accounts.<\/p>\n
Kustanto said that the enraged mob of locals eventually set
\nthe suspect alight once they had him down. The man later died of
\nsevere burns on the way to hospital.<\/p>\n
Despite the punishment meted out, not one member of the mob
\nwas held responsible for the violence.<\/p>\n
It was the first reported case of burning a suspected thief
\nthis year in Tangerang, but last year, according to police
\nrecords, at least a dozen such cases took place. -- JP<\/p>",
