Mixed marriages made easy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Procedures for mixed marriages involving Moslems
\nfrom Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia will be
\nless tortuous in the future.<\/p>\n
The four neighboring countries have agreed to simplify legal
\nand administrative procedures for such marriages, and to set up
\nhot lines linking their religious affairs offices to facilitate
\nprocessing of marriage license applications, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The news agency quoted Ichtianto, a staff member at the
\nMinistry of Religious Affairs, as saying that the new procedures
\nwill not undermine regulations in individual countries.<\/p>\n
\"There are regulations which are already identical because
\nthey are based on Islamic teaching, but there are differences on,
\nfor instance, the ages at which people can legally marry,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In the past, marriages among citizens of the four countries
\ntended to take a long time to process and usually involved
\ncomplicated legal and administrative procedures.<\/p>\n
With the hot line program, Indonesians in any of the three
\ncountries will no longer be required to get statements of their
\neligibility from each of the ministries of religious affairs,
\njustice and foreign affairs as well as from the Indonesian
\nEmbassy in the country they were living in.<\/p>\n
The new hot line will tend to the matter in a shorter time.<\/p>\n
Ichtianto said the simplified procedures will help Indonesian
\nMoslems working in any of the other three countries if they
\nwished to marry local citizens but could not go home to organize
