Missing paraglider found dead in Puncak<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): After four days of an intensive search, rescuers
\nfound on Saturday the corpse of paraglider Dadang Suharya, who
\nwent missing last Tuesday in the mountainous resort area of
\nPuncak, Bogor regency, West Java.<\/p>\n
\"Dadang was found dead at 1 p.m. below the Pasir Sumbul
\nTelecommunication Tower in dense woodland some one kilometer east
\nof the paragliding launch pad,\" head of the Search and Rescue
\n(SAR) Team, Col. Wardjoko, said on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Wardjoko, who is also commander of the nearby Atang Senjaya
\nAir Force Base, said the corpse of the 17-year-old paraglider was
\ntaken to the Red Cross Hospital in Bogor for examination.<\/p>\n
\"The body was taken in a body bag to the hospital for an
\nautopsy, on a BO-105 chopper owned by the National SAR Agency
\n(Basarnas),\" he told The Jakarta Post by phone from the spot.<\/p>\n
Dozens of rescuers explored every inch of ground to find the
\nparaglider, who went missing after being surprised by storms
\nwhile flying in foggy skies over the Gunung Mas Tea Plantation
\narea in Puncak, a favorite retreat for Jakartans.<\/p>\n
SAR team member Gendon Subandono told the Post on Friday that
\nthe thick fog had limited their vision in their search for
\nDadang.<\/p>\n
The family of the paraglider would not allow the hospital to
\ndo an autopsy, rendering it unable to pinpoint the exact cause of
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
A forensic staffer at the hospital, Dedi Subandi, said
\nDadang's family sent a message to the hospital via the rescue
\nteam, saying that the corpse should be sent directly to his home
\nfor burial.<\/p>\n
\"The family prohibited the hospital to perform an autopsy, and
\nasked the hospital to wrap the body in white cloth,\" he told the
\nPost by phone on late Saturday.<\/p>\n
It is Muslim belief that a corpse should be buried as soon as
\npossible after death. Muslims also believe a corpse should be
\nburied with all organs intact.<\/p>\n
However, Dedi said, the hospital would wait for a written
\nstatement from the victim's family regarding an autopsy.<\/p>\n
Hospital regulations state that a hospital is not allowed to
\ndo an autopsy after a written statement disallowing the procedure
\nis issued by the family of a victim and approved by local police.<\/p>\n
Dedi said the body of the paraglider suffered only slight
\ninjuries, with no fractures apparent.<\/p>\n
\"But his palms were shriveled as though they had been soaked
\nin water. The body was also in a state of decomposition, which is
\nestimated to have started on Wednesday,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Rescue team member Lilik, however, argued that the victim was
\nnot submerged in water. \"His body was some 10 meters from a small
\nriver there, while the paraglider was suspended from a tree,\" he
\ntold the Post.<\/p>\n
Dedi suggested there should be an autopsy to reveal the
\nprecise cause of death.<\/p>\n
\"With an autopsy, we can examine organs of the victim to
\ndetermine precisely the cause of death,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Dadang, along with fellow paraglider Ade Basoni, was flying on
\nTuesday afternoon when storms broke out. Dadang was blown off
\ncourse by strong winds, while Ade managed to make an emergency
\nlanding at a landing pad.<\/p>\n
Dadang, a second year student at Ciawi Economic Vocational
\nHigh School in Megamendung district, had been a keen paraglider
