'Missing' land puzzles authorities<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysian authorities yesterday were
\ninvestigating the \"disappearance\" of some 18,000 hectares
\n(45,000 acres) of land to be gazetted as permanent forest
\nreserves in northern Kedah state.<\/p>\n
The area, constituting about half of the 35,567 hectares of
\nland earmarked to be gazetted, has been classified as missing,
\nKedah land officials said.<\/p>\n
Initial investigations revealed the \"missing\" land had either
\nbeen sold or given away under the previous administration but the
\nland office has no official records of this.<\/p>\n
Geographically, the area reported \"missing\" is the size of
\nnorthern Penang island, officials said. The Star daily reported
\nyesterday that some of the lots given away had been issued land
\ntitles.<\/p>",
