The sending of an Indonesian girl by a private agency to the
\nMiss Universe contest has triggered a debate in the country, with
\nsome coming out in favor of participation, others against it and
\nthe rest remaining indifferent.<\/p>\n
After decades of restriction, the issue has again surfaced.
\nPerhaps when talking about democracy, we overlook its spirit and
\nforget that actions that tend to bring about disadvantages should
\nbe avoided.<\/p>\n
To certain religious circles, for instance, some body parts
\nare not to be laid bare in public. These views should be
\nrespected as they can serve to enrich our understanding of democracy.
\nThose in favor of the contest should respect the freedom of
\nothers to see things that are edifying.<\/p>\n
As part of the process of democracy, Miss Indonesia should
\nconsider the greatest benefit to be gained, whether that is the
\nbenefit to the younger generation's education or an influx of
\nforeign exchange into the country.<\/p>\n
Even if more foreign exchange does flow into the country as a
\nresult of Indonesia's participation in the contest, we may still
\nfind ourselves sacrificing the noble values of democracy by
\nmisunderstanding freedom and inducing a moral polemic.<\/p>\n
