Ministry to examine refueling practices<\/p>\n

Following allegations from budget carrier Batavia Air that it was
\nsupplied with adulterated fuel, the Ministry of Transportation,
\ntogether with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, is
\nsetting up a joint committee to examine aircraft refueling
\npractices at the country's airports.<\/p>\n
Minister of Transportation Hatta Radjasa said on Tuesday that
\nthe move would allow his ministry to play a bigger role as
\nthe current airline audits did not give his ministry the chance
\nto check aircraft fuel tanks.<\/p>\n
Hatta added that the two ministries would also carry out
\ninvestigations into the allegations.<\/p>\n
Previously, Batavia Air filed a complaint with state oil company
\nPertamina and the transportation ministry alleging that the fuel
\npumped into one of its aircraft at Makassar had been mixed with
\nwater.<\/p>\n
The company reported that it had found a significant amount of
\nwater in the aircraft's tanks after it was filled with jet fuel
\nsupplied by Pertamina.<\/p>\n
The oil company denied the allegations, saying it had standard
\noperating procedures for checking on the condition and quality of
\nthe fuel before it was pumped into an aircraft's tanks.<\/p>\n
\"The preliminary examination includes a water check using a
\nwater detector,\" said Pertamina public relations officer Abadi
\nOetomo in a written statement.<\/p>\n
Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Purnomo Yusgiantoro
\nsupported Pertamina's explanation, adding the water could have
\nresulted from condensation in the fuel tanks.<\/p>\n
Pertamina submitted a request for an investigations by the two
\nministries, the National Police forensic laboratory and the
\nNational Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).<\/p>\n
\"The two ministries are going to investigate the matter and
\nwill later carry out inspections at all airports,\" said NTSB
\nchairman Setio Rahardjo.<\/p>",
